AMERICAN MUSLIMS FOR DEMOCRACY (AMD)

WHAT IS AMD?

American Muslims For Democracy

The AMERICAN MUSLIMS FOR DEMOCRACY (AMD) is a non-partisan, non-religious, not-for-profit, and all-inclusive social welfare organization founded in 2014. Our mission is to enhance the Muslim presence on the political map of New Jersey in a manner that is equitable to their numerical strength and commensurate with their contributions to civil society while educating American Muslims about the need for civic engagement and participation in the political process.

American Muslims for Democracy has actively engaged in coalition building with a variety of interfaith and community organizations over the past decade across the state. We are committed to fostering partnerships with Local, County, State, and Federal law enforcement agencies and legislators to promote open communication within the community and advocate for issues directly affecting the Muslim community and marginalized groups statewide.

Our recent achievements include:

  • Fundraising and assisting grassroots charitable organizations with daily operations.
  • Bringing attention to and expressing concerns about Rise in Islamophobia in central New Jersey.
  • Providing education on Islamophobia and Islam/Muslims to law enforcement and school districts.
  • Connecting youth with resources through events like the Law Enforcement Job Fair in central Jersey, which was attended by over 30 agencies.
  • Advocating for the Muslim community by meeting with legislators and co-organizing an annual Muslim advocacy day.
  • Hosting county-wide and regional meetings with the Muslim community and various law enforcement agencies.
  • Securing successful appointments

Leading meetings with Muslim leaders statewide to identify community concerns:

  • Formation of the Muslim Advisory Council
  • Advocacy for Muslim Appreciation/Heritage Month
  • Facilitating appointments to Authorities/Boards/Commissions/Governor’s senior leadership team
  • Advocating for a Muslim Cabinet Member
  • Establishment of a Commission to study the wealth gap and its disproportionate impact on the African American community
  • Ensuring representation among Prosecutors and Judges
  • Formulating a unified definition of Islamophobia
  • Promoting diversity in the administration’s employment of Muslims
  • Advocating for inclusive school curricula
  • Recognition of the Eid holiday.

Through our collaborative efforts in coalition building, guided direction, diligent efforts, and backing from legislators and senators, we are thrilled to announce the designation of January as Muslim Heritage Month, successfully celebrated under the MHM Coalition umbrella (https://mhmcoalition.org/). NJ Muslim Voter registration activities are progressing rapidly through NJMVP (https://njmvp.org/), and we are actively engaged with various coalitions on other community priorities, resulting in significant progress. Insha’Allah, we anticipate many positive outcomes for our community, with a particular focus on our youth.
